A personal assistant is a qualified, employed or authorized individual who cares for and accompanies a person with a severe disability, offering daily support to help them lead a life as independent and dignified as possible.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the beneficiary with daily personal hygiene (toileting, bathing, dressing);

  • Providing appropriate nutrition and hydration based on their needs and abilities;

  • Assisting with mobility at home or outdoors using appropriate aids (walker, wheelchair, etc.);

  • Monitoring the health condition and reporting relevant changes to family or medical personnel;

  • Administering medication as instructed;

  • Accompanying the person to doctor visits, social or religious activities;

  • Facilitating communication and community involvement;

  • Providing emotional support during challenging moments.

📘 Course structure – skills acquired:

The course has a total duration of 180 hours, divided into theoretical and practical modules:

🔹 Module 1: Legal and Institutional Framework

  • Law no. 448/2006 on the rights of persons with disabilities;

  • Rights of the beneficiary and duties of the personal assistant;

  • Collaboration with local authorities, DGASPC, and other relevant institutions.

🔹 Module 2: Professional Ethics and Empathetic Communication

  • Code of ethics for social workers;

  • Non-verbal communication and active listening;

  • Managing the assistant–beneficiary–family relationship.

🔹 Module 3: Hygiene, Nutrition, and Daily Care

  • Personal and household hygiene rules;

  • Techniques for care and mobility assistance;

  • Appropriate nutrition and hydration.

🔹 Module 4: First Aid and Emergency Response

  • Identifying, preventing, and responding to critical situations;

  • Basic life support (ABC of first aid);

  • Communication with emergency services.

🔹 Module 5: Supervised Practical Training

  • Real-life applications in caring for a person with a severe disability;

  • Simulation exercises and case studies;

  • Reflection and professional feedback.
